Catherine Smith

As the Educational Manager, Catherine Smith provides leadership on the preparation and professional development of educational personnel in Michigan, leading efforts to ensure higher standards of preparation of Michigan teachers and stronger professional development. She has served as education research coordinator for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and led Michigan’s efforts to assess high school students’ skills through career readiness portfolios and as Acting Supervisor of MEAP. Smith’s background includes consulting with the Higher Education Management Services in MDE on academic outcomes and budgets as well as teaching sociology at Michigan State University. Her sociological research focuses on public sector organizations and their professional employees. Her assessment research focuses on validity and reliability of portfolio assessment.
