Vice President for State Relations
Melanie Biermann, a former high school social studies and English teacher, earned her BA in History from Lynchburg College (VA), an MA in Classics from the University of Colorado, and a PhD in Education from the University of Virginia. She served as a faculty member in social studies education at Virginia Tech and was the coordinator for graduate education at the Hagerstown Center of Frostburg State University (MD) for six years. Dr. Biermann also was the founding director of education at Montpelier, Home of James Madison (VA). Immediately before coming to TEAC as the vice president for state relations, she was a teacher education specialist at the Virginia Department of Education and coordinated the approved program and national accreditation processes for the Commonwealth. She has authored a number of articles and has presented more than 100 workshops and sessions at professional conferences. Among other honors, she has been the winner of the Carey Brewer Alumni Award and the Evelyn Bickham Outstanding Alumna Award from Lynchburg College.
